How To Repair a Write Protected Disk

Hi guys am going to show you how you can fix your flash disk when it says write protected. I have tried this method on several disks but am not a 100 % sure it will work. First
Insert Your disk in your Computer
Open the Command prompt by going to search on the start button(Windows 7) or run (Windows XP) then typing cmd
On the command prompt type: Diskpart
then a administator cmd window shows up, in it type: list volume
A list of volumes shows up, look up for your volume in the list and then type: select volume n(where n is the number of your drive)
then type: attribute disk clear readonly
and now close the CMD window and eject the flash disk then insert again and now your Flash drive will work.
Your comments are gladly accepted.

  1. I'm afraid it only works if the readonly flag is actually on. The flag is not set on my drives.

You may like to look at the posts on Microsoft Community website here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/usb-flash-drive-prompts-with-write-protected/2012d40c-7d90-4967-b2c2-2d67c08561e2?page=3

I've tried all known solutions, since I have a lot of USB drives which I issue to students and throwing them away is not a desirable option. So far, I have been unable to get them to work.

  2. Sorry to necro this post, however, I may have found a solution, or, well, someone elses solution. The issue has to do with bitlocker. the solution is in regedit, but not with the StorageDevicePolicy control. Here is the work around that was found. Sorry to Birchyboy that this is 5 years to late. https://windowsforum.com/threads/bitlocker-denying-write-access-to-usb-thumb-drive.78691/page-2

Anyway, I decided to share since I have yet to see the fix posted anywhere else.
